It is the size most often discussed for detached Lower Mainland homes of modest heat loss.

On low fire this furnace burns 39,000 BTU/h and delivers 38,000 BTU/h; on high fire it burns 60,000 BTU/h and delivers 58,000 BTU/h. In a well-insulated Burnaby or Vancouver house the low stage can carry most of the heating season, which is where the two-stage design earns its keep in comfort and quietness rather than in a dramatic fuel saving over a single-stage 95% unit.
The 17.5-inch cabinet and 3/4 HP blower give this size more airflow than its 14.2-inch sibling (060V14–12): 1,030 CFM in high heat and up to 1,565 CFM for cooling. That matters when a heat pump or air conditioner will share the ductwork. Carrier publishes 96.3% AFUE upflow and 95.0% for downflow and horizontal, so the certified figure depends on how it is installed.
Whether 60,000 BTU/h is right for a given house is a heat-loss question, not a floor-area question. Carrier's own product data says none of the sizes should be used where the heating load is 20,000 BTU/h or lower and warns that excessive oversizing can cause premature failure and vent freezing. Is 60,000 BTU/h enough for my house?
Only a heat-loss calculation can answer that. Output on high fire is 58,000 BTU/h, which covers many well-insulated detached homes in the Lower Mainland, but square footage alone is not a sizing method. BC Wide confirms the size during an assessment.
What is the difference between the 060V17–16 and the 060V14–12?
Same 60,000 BTU/h input and outputs. The 060V17–16 has a wider 17.5-inch cabinet, a 3/4 HP blower with more airflow, and 96.3% AFUE upflow versus 95.0% for the narrower unit.
Can this furnace run on propane?
Yes, with a CSA-listed Carrier conversion kit installed by a licensed gas fitter. It ships set up for natural gas.
