The top of the modulating family runs between 48,000 BTU/h minimum input (47,000 BTU/h output) and 120,000 BTU/h maximum input (117,000 BTU/h output), giving the widest absolute modulation range in Carrier's residential line. Carrier certifies 97.2% AFUE upflow and horizontal and 95.0% downflow for this size.

The 24.5-inch, 184 lb cabinet holds six burners and a 1 HP communicating constant-airflow blower reaching 2,170 CFM for cooling, and needs a mechanical room and a duct system built for it. The variable-speed inducer and modulating gas valve step together through the communicating Infinity control.

A 120,000 BTU/h-class modulating furnace serves genuinely large or poorly insulated houses; for everyone else it is an expensive way to oversize. Carrier's product data is explicit that excessive oversizing can shorten furnace and vent life. The size and control configuration follow a heat-loss calculation.

Questions people ask

Is this the most powerful gas furnace Carrier makes?

It is the largest of the current Infinity 98 modulating family at 120,000 BTU/h input. Carrier's Comfort 96 single-stage line extends to 140,000 BTU/h, but not as a modulating furnace.

Does the Infinity 98 run on a standard thermostat?

As a communicating modulating furnace it is designed for an Infinity Control or compatible Infinity user interface; the modulating behaviour depends on the communicating control. Confirm the control configuration with the installer.
