The Performance 97's smallest size keeps the two-stage story of its 96 sibling and adds a certified efficiency step: 97.0% AFUE upflow, 96.3% horizontal and 95.0% downflow in Carrier's product data. Low fire is 39,000 BTU/h input and 38,000 BTU/h output; high fire is 60,000 BTU/h input and 58,000 BTU/h output.
The 17.5-inch cabinet carries a 3/4 HP variable 25-speed ECM blower that reaches 1,565 CFM for cooling, matching the 060V17–16 of the Performance 96 cabinet for cabinet. The certified low-heat temperature rise range is narrower on this family (25 to 55 °F), which reflects its airflow settings rather than a different heat exchanger.
There is no smaller size in the Performance 97 family, so houses whose heat-loss calculation lands below this furnace step down to the Performance 96 or Comfort 96. Whether 60,000 BTU/h input suits a given house is a heat-loss question; Carrier's product data repeats the standing warning against excessive oversizing.

Is the 97% AFUE worth the difference from the Performance 96?
The Performance 97 certifies 97.0% upflow versus 96.1–96.7% for the 96 family. The real-world gas difference is roughly one dollar per hundred. The staging and blower are the same generation, so the choice is efficiency and availability, not comfort.
