The 060V17–16 delivers 58,000 BTU/h on high fire in a 17.5-inch cabinet and suits up to about 3.5 tons of cooling; the 080V21–20 delivers 78,000 BTU/h in a 21-inch cabinet with a 1 HP blower for up to 5 tons. Pick by heat-loss calculation and cooling airflow, not by which sounds safer.

Heating output is the headline difference: 58,000 versus 78,000 BTU/h on high fire, and 38,000 versus 51,000 BTU/h on low. A house with a design heat loss around 45,000 BTU/h is comfortably served by the 060; the 080 would spend most of its life on low fire, which is not harmful but is more furnace than needed.
Airflow decides the rest. The 080V21–20's 1 HP blower moves up to 2,110 CFM for cooling, enough for a 5-ton air conditioner or heat pump. The 060V17–16 tops out at 1,565 CFM, or about 3.5 tons at 400 CFM per ton. If a large heat pump is planned on the same ducts, the wider furnace may be chosen for its blower even where the heating load is modest.
Efficiency is close: 96.3% versus 96.7% AFUE upflow, and 95.0% for both in downflow or horizontal positions. Electrical requirements differ: the 080V21–20 lists a 20 A maximum breaker and 12 AWG minimum wire by default, the 060V17–16 a 15 A breaker and 14 AWG.
Physical fit matters in older Burnaby basements: the 080 is 3.5 inches wider and 15 lb heavier. Both are 35 inches tall and 29.5 inches deep.
Questions people ask
Is bigger safer?
No. Oversizing shortens cycles, wears components and, per Carrier's own product data, can cause premature furnace or vent failure. Size from the heat-loss calculation.
Can the 060 handle a 4-ton heat pump?
Carrier lists 4 tons at 350 CFM per ton for the 060V17–16, but airflow at that setting depends on the ductwork's static pressure. The assessment measures this.
