Every call for heat runs this furnace at its one gas rate: 40,000 BTU/h in and 39,000 BTU/h out until the thermostat is satisfied. The single-stage Performance 96 is Carrier's answer for buyers who want the Performance controls and blower without paying for two-stage firing, and Carrier certifies this size at 96.7% AFUE upflow and 95% downflow and horizontal.
The 17.5-inch cabinet pairs two burners with a 1/2 HP variable 25-speed ECM blower reaching 1,105 CFM for cooling, and the same 3-digit display control and InteliSense option as the two-stage Performance models. The 14.2-inch sibling (040V14–10) delivers the same heat at 96.0% upflow for narrow closets.
A 40,000 BTU/h input furnace serves many well-insulated Lower Mainland houses, but the size decision belongs to a heat-loss calculation. Carrier's product data warns that excessive oversizing can shorten furnace and vent life, and that none of its sizes may be used where the heating load is 20,000 BTU/h or lower.

Questions people ask
Why buy the single-stage Performance 96 instead of the two-stage one?
The 59SP6B costs less than the two-stage 59TP6C and shares its blower generation and controls. The trade-off is one gas rate: it fires at full rate on every call, so rooms move a little more on mild days.
What is the difference between the 040V17–12 and the 040V14–10?
Same 40,000 BTU/h input and 39,000 BTU/h output. The 040V14–10 has the narrow 14.2-inch cabinet, slightly lower certified upflow AFUE (96.0% versus 96.7%) and a smaller cooling airflow range.
