Carrier certifies this size at 97.0% AFUE upflow, 96.7% horizontal and 95.0% downflow. Low fire is 52,000 BTU/h input and 50,000 BTU/h output; high fire is 80,000 BTU/h input and 76,000 BTU/h output, which is 2,000 BTU/h less high-fire output than the Performance 96's 080V21–20 at the same input, a reminder that DOE outputs are family-specific figures, not arithmetic.

The 1 HP blower moves 1,400 CFM in high heat and up to 2,110 CFM for cooling, which is why the 21-inch width is chosen when a 4- to 5-ton air conditioner or heat pump shares the ductwork. The narrower 17.5-inch sibling (080V17–16) carries the same gas inputs with a 3/4 HP blower and certifies 96.2% horizontal.

An 80,000 BTU/h input is a large furnace for many Lower Mainland houses, whose design heat loss is often far lower. Carrier's product data repeats the warning that excessive oversizing can cause premature furnace and vent failure. The size is chosen from a heat-loss calculation, not from the old furnace.

Questions people ask

Why does the 080V21–20 output less than the Performance 96's 080V21–20?

Carrier's product data lists 76,000 BTU/h high-fire output for the 59TP7A 080V21–20 versus 78,000 BTU/h for the 59TP6C 080V21–20 at the same 80,000 BTU/h input. Output figures follow the DOE test results for each family and are copied here exactly as published.

Does this furnace need a 20-amp circuit?

Carrier lists a maximum fuse or breaker of 20 A with 12 AWG minimum wire by default; an optional low-amp kit allows 15 A with 14 AWG wire. The electrician confirms on site.
