Low fire is 65,000 BTU/h input and 63,000 BTU/h output; high fire is 100,000 BTU/h input and 97,000 BTU/h output. This is the size a 1960s or 1970s house with original windows, little insulation and a big open layout may land on after a heat-loss calculation, and it is also the size that shows up in retrofit jobs where an old 120,000 BTU/h furnace proved genuinely undersized for the ductwork and the house.
The 1 HP blower moves 1,715 CFM in high heat at rated static pressure and up to 2,170 CFM for cooling, enough for a 5-ton coil at 400 CFM per ton. The 100V21–22 sibling in the same 21-inch cabinet adds an extended airflow profile (525 to 2,250 CFM, certified 96.2% upflow) and is the choice when maximum cooling airflow matters more than anything else in this width.
Oversizing is the trap with 100,000 BTU/h inputs. Carrier's product data repeats the warning that excessive oversizing can shorten furnace and vent life, and its sizing note says none of the sizes may be used where the heating load is 20,000 BTU/h or lower. A house that needs 100,000 BTU/h input is uncommon among newer Lower Mainland homes; when the old furnace was 120,000 BTU/h and the house has since been insulated, the calculation usually comes back smaller.

Questions people ask
When is 100,000 BTU/h actually needed in the Lower Mainland?
Only when a heat-loss calculation says so. Mild Vancouver winters mean many detached homes calculate well below 80,000 BTU/h; the 100,000 BTU/h sizes serve the minority of larger, older or poorly insulated houses. Ask for the number before accepting any size.
What is the difference between the 100V21–20 and the 100V21–22?
Same gas inputs and outputs in the same 21-inch cabinet. The 100V21–22 has the extended airflow blower profile (up to 2,250 CFM for cooling versus 2,170 CFM), 96.2% instead of 96.1% AFUE upflow, and a slightly different electrical draw. It is 1 lb heavier.
Does this size need a 20-amp circuit?
Carrier lists a maximum fuse or circuit breaker of 20 A and 12 AWG minimum wire for the 100V21–20 by default. The 120,000 BTU/h unit offers an optional low-amp kit; confirm with the electrician on site.
