The 59TP6C 040V17–12 is Carrier's smallest Performance 96: 40,000 BTU/h input, 26,000 BTU/h on low fire, 39,000 BTU/h output on high, 96.0% AFUE upflow, in a 17.5-inch cabinet with a 1/2 HP variable-speed ECM blower. It is the size Carrier's data targets where the heating load is modest and the tightest fit and smallest venting count.

On low fire this furnace burns 26,000 BTU/h and delivers 25,000 BTU/h; on high fire it burns 40,000 BTU/h and delivers 39,000 BTU/h. That makes it the only 59TP6C size Carrier's product data places below the 60,000 BTU/h step, and it is the size discussed for well-insulated bungalows, main-floor suites, laneway homes and other small houses in the Lower Mainland whose design heat loss sits under roughly 35,000 BTU/h.
Carrier's own product data warns that none of the 59TP6C sizes should be used where the heating load is 20,000 BTU/h or lower, and that excessive oversizing can cause premature failure, vent freezing and discomfort. A 40,000 BTU/h input furnace is not automatically right for a small house; the heat-loss calculation decides. Where a low load rules out a 95%+ furnace of any size, the conversation moves to alternatives such as a heat pump, not to a bigger furnace.
The 040V17–12 shares the family's two-stage Comfort Heat logic, variable 25-speed blower and two-speed inducer with the larger sizes, but it uses two burners and the smallest blower wheel in the family. Its certified AFUE is 96.0% upflow and 95.0% downflow or horizontal. The 14.2-inch-wide 040V14–10 sibling (14-3/16 in. cabinet, 126 lb) delivers the same inputs and outputs and is the 59TP6C size most likely to fit a narrow closet; Carrier's data gives it the same 96.0% upflow figure.

Questions people ask
Is 40,000 BTU/h too small for my house?
It depends entirely on the design heat loss. Many well-insulated Lower Mainland homes lose far less than 40,000 BTU/h on the coldest day, which is exactly the case this size exists for. A heat-loss calculation decides; square footage alone cannot.
What is the difference between the 040V17–12 and the 040V14–10?
Identical gas inputs and outputs and the same 96.0% upflow AFUE. The 040V14–10 is 3.3 inches narrower (14-3/16 in.), 10 lb lighter, and its blower tops out near 1,035 CFM of cooling airflow instead of 1,105 CFM.
Does the smallest furnace in the series cost less to run?
Running cost follows the heat loss of the house and the efficiency of the equipment, not the size alone. A correctly sized 040 will cycle properly; an oversized furnace of any size wastes gas in short cycles.
