Carrier Performance 96 single-stage (59SP6B)
The Carrier Performance 96 single-stage (59SP6B) is the one-gas-rate member of the Performance line: a single-stage condensing furnace rated up to 97% AFUE, with a variable 25-speed ECM blower, single-speed inducer and InteliSense capability, sold in eight sizes from 40,000 to 120,000 BTU/h input.

Carrier sells two Performance 96 families: the two-stage 59TP6C and this single-stage 59SP6B. The single-stage version fires at one gas rate on every call, which keeps first cost and simplicity ahead of the two-stage model while the blower side is the same generation: a variable 25-speed constant-torque ECM, ComfortFan continuous-fan control and the 3-digit display control with InteliSense capability.
Despite the Performance 96 name, Carrier's product data certifies the wider sizes at 97.0% AFUE upflow (96.7% and 96.3% on the 040V17–12 and 100V21–20, and 95% to 96% on the narrow 040 and 060 siblings), with 95% downflow and horizontal everywhere. The AFUE on the rating plate is the one for the installed position.
Eight sizes span 40,000 to 120,000 BTU/h input in 14.2-inch, 17.5-inch, 21-inch and 24.5-inch cabinets. The family carries the same standing sizing note as the rest of Carrier's line: none of the sizes may be used where the heating load is 20,000 BTU/h or lower, and excessive oversizing can shorten furnace and vent life.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between the two Performance 96 models?
The 59TP6C is two-stage (low and high fire) and the 59SP6B is single-stage. Both use the same generation of variable-speed ECM blower and controls. The single-stage version costs less and runs at full fire on every call.
Why is it called Performance 96 when some sizes certify at 97%?
The marketing name and the certified figures are separate things. Carrier's product data certifies 97.0% AFUE upflow for the 60,000 to 80,000 BTU/h sizes, with the rating plate carrying the figure for your installed size and position.
Is a single-stage furnace a step backwards from the two-stage?
Not for every house. For a small, steady heat loss, a correctly sized single-stage furnace is a perfectly honest choice and costs less. The two-stage earns its premium on larger or variable-load houses where low-fire cycling keeps temperatures steadier.
