Two-stage heating means the furnace has a low-fire and a high-fire gas rate. Carrier's Comfort Heat technology chooses the stage and run time each cycle from current and past conditions, so on a mild Vancouver day the furnace can run long, quiet low-fire cycles instead of blasting on and off. The blower is Carrier's variable 25-speed constant-torque ECM; it is not the constant-airflow (VCA) motor used in Infinity furnaces, and it does not report airflow back to the control.
The 59TP6C replaced the earlier 59TP6A and 59TP6B generations of the same marketing name. The rating plate shows the exact family code and the control's model program number, both of which matter when looking up status codes or ordering parts. This site keeps each generation's documentation separate rather than assuming they share controls.
Every size can be vented as a sealed-combustion two-pipe system, as single-pipe, or with ventilated combustion air, using 2-, 3- or 4-inch terminations depending on size and total equivalent length. Condensate must be drained; the installation instructions cover trap orientation for all four mounting positions and winterization where a drain could freeze.

Questions people ask
Is the Performance 96 a variable-speed furnace?
It has a variable 25-speed ECM blower and a two-stage burner. Those are two different things: the blower changes speed, but the gas rate has only two settings. A modulating furnace such as Carrier's Infinity 98 varies the gas rate continuously.
What AFUE will my furnace actually have?
It depends on the size and on how it is installed. Carrier publishes upflow AFUE from 95.0% to 96.7% by size, and 95.0% for downflow and horizontal installations on every size. The rating plate on the furnace states the certified figure for its position.
How do I know if I have a 59TP6A, 59TP6B or 59TP6C?
Read the full model number on the rating plate inside the blower door. The sixth character is the series letter. Only the 59TP6C is documented on this site so far; status codes and settings differ between generations.
