Carrier 59TN7A status code 10.1: rapid flash - L1 polarity fault
Status code 10.1 means the control detected incorrect polarity of the 115 V supply (line and neutral reversed at the furnace) or a missing equipment ground. Carrier's installation instructions state that with improper polarity the diagnostic light flashes rapidly, code 10.1 is displayed, and the furnace will not operate.

A code is a condition, not a diagnosis
Code 10.1 does not by itself say whether the problem is a reversed connection at the furnace, at the disconnect, in the branch circuit, or a missing ground. Finding it requires checking polarity and ground continuity at the furnace connections with power off. A furnace that worked for years and now shows 10.1 points to recent electrical work or a damaged cord or whip rather than to the control.
Which furnaces this applies to
Documented for Carrier 59TN7A furnaces (all nine sizes) in installation instructions 59TN7A-01SI REV A, edition 06/23. The same manual notes that the control also requires an earth ground for proper operation of the control and the flame-sensing electrode. This is an installation-wiring condition, not a failed furnace part.

Safe things to look at first
- Read the full code on the control display through the door, including any minor digit (for example 33.2), and write it down.
- Look, without touching, for obvious conditions you can report: snow or ice at the vent terminations, water on the floor, a loaded filter, a condensate pump that is full or off.
- Note whether the furnace still heats at all, and how long it runs before the code returns.
- Tell the technician about any recent electrical work, a new disconnect switch, or a replaced power cord or whip.
Do not
- Do not bypass or jumper the door switch, limit switches, rollout switches or pressure switches.
- Do not open the burner compartment, disconnect tubing, or adjust the gas valve or gas pressure.
- Do not keep cycling power to force the furnace to relight; repeated resets hide the fault and can allow unburned gas to build up after ignition failures. If the code returns, stop and call.

- Confirm the furnace power switch and breaker are on
- Report any recent electrical work or a replaced power cord
- Note whether other appliances on the same circuit work

What a technician does
- A technician verifies the 115 V supply polarity and the equipment ground at the furnace with power isolated, and corrects any reversed connections before returning the furnace to service.
- If polarity and ground check out, the control itself is tested against the wiring diagram (Fig. 61 of the installation instructions).

Is code 10.1 dangerous?
It stops the furnace from operating, which is the control protecting itself from a miswired supply. The hazard is the underlying electrical condition, so a licensed electrician or technician should find and correct it rather than leaving the furnace disabled.
Can I fix the polarity myself?
Changing line and neutral connections inside the furnace involves opening the electrical compartment of a gas appliance. Have a technician verify and correct the wiring.
