Most replacement calls start with a 1990s or 2000s mid-efficiency furnace that has failed, or a 20-year-old condensing furnace with a cracked heat exchanger or repeated control faults. A modern two-stage or modulating furnace at 95% to 98% AFUE cuts gas use compared with an 80% unit, but the bigger day-to-day difference is comfort: longer, quieter low-fire cycles and steadier room temperatures.
Replacement is where venting, condensate and gas-supply issues surface. An 80% furnace vented into a metal B-vent or masonry chimney needs a new sealed plastic vent route; a condensing furnace needs a drain or a condensate pump; a different cabinet width needs plenum and return transitions. The estimator lists these as price drivers so there are no surprises.
Carrier specifics
Carrier sells residential gas furnaces in Canada through its Canadian site and dealer network, in three tiers: Comfort, Performance and Infinity. Furnaces range from single-stage models to modulating units with variable-speed blowers, and all current sizes are design certified in Canada.
BC Wide lists Carrier among the brands it works on. Factory-authorized dealer status for Carrier has not been confirmed and is not claimed here.

Permits: Yes for the gas work — a gas permit from Technical Safety BC or, in the six municipalities with their own systems, from the municipality. BC Wide pulls it.
When not to DIY
- Never open the burner compartment or work on gas, combustion or venting components yourself
- Gas piping work requires a Technical Safety BC licensed gas contractor and the applicable permit
- If you smell gas, leave the building and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911 before anything else

If the furnace has failed, a technician confirms the fault and gives you a repair price alongside a replacement range.
Assessment
Heat loss, ducts, venting route, condensate and gas supply are checked so the proposal is complete.

Old furnace out, new furnace in, commissioned with combustion analysis and temperature-rise checks.
Questions people ask
Can I replace my furnace with the same size?
The old size is a poor guide. Older furnaces were commonly oversized and a 95%+ furnace delivers more heat per BTU of input. A heat-loss calculation sets the new size.
Can the new furnace use my old metal chimney?
A condensing furnace cannot vent into a B-vent or masonry chimney. It needs plastic venting to an approved termination. If a water heater shared the chimney, that chimney may need a liner once the furnace leaves it.
Should I add a heat pump at the same time?
Sometimes. A dual-fuel system uses the heat pump in mild weather and the furnace in cold weather. Whether it pays off depends on your house, ducts and electrical service; ask for a consultation rather than assuming.
