The Performance 97 sits one efficiency step above the Performance 96 in Carrier's Canadian line-up: the same two-stage Comfort Heat logic and variable 25-speed blower family, with every size certified at 97.0% AFUE upflow. Carrier's product data separates the figures by position, certifying 95.0% downflow and 96.1% to 96.7% horizontal by size, so the installed figure depends on how the furnace sits.
Like its 96 sibling, the 59TP7A runs low and high fire from the two-stage gas valve with a two-speed inducer, and its blower is the variable 25-speed constant-torque ECM rather than a communicating constant-airflow motor. It is InteliSense capable with an ecobee for Carrier smart thermostat, and it shares the 3-digit display control generation with the 59TP6C.
Six sizes cover 60,000 to 120,000 BTU/h input in 17.5-inch, 21-inch and 24.5-inch cabinets. There is no 40,000 BTU/h size in this family; houses that small step down to the Comfort 96 or Performance 96. As with every family in Carrier's product data, none of the sizes may be used where the heating load is 20,000 BTU/h or lower, and excessive oversizing is warned against in the same terms.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between the Performance 96 and the Performance 97?
The Performance 97 is certified at 97.0% AFUE upflow on every size, a step above the Performance 96's 96.1–96.7%. The staging, blower family and controls are the same two-stage InteliSense generation; the efficiency difference is roughly one gas dollar in a hundred, so the choice usually follows price and availability.
What AFUE will my installation have?
It depends on position. Carrier certifies the 59TP7A at 97.0% upflow, 95.0% downflow, and 96.1% to 96.7% horizontal depending on the size. The rating plate states the certified figure for the installed position.
Is the Performance 97 a modulating furnace?
No. It is two-stage: low and high fire. Carrier's modulating furnace is the Infinity 98 (59MN7), which varies the gas rate continuously. The variable-speed blower on the 59TP7A is a separate feature from the burner staging.
