Efficiency is the name of the game: the 59TP7A certifies 97.0% AFUE upflow versus 96.7% for the 59TP6C, and Carrier publishes a separate horizontal figure for the 97 family (96.7% here) while the 96 family certifies a combined 95.0% downflow and horizontal. Downflow is 95.0% on both.
The outputs differ in Carrier's published data even though the inputs are identical (80,000/52,000 BTU/h): the 59TP7A lists 76,000 BTU/h high-fire and 50,000 BTU/h low-fire output, while the 59TP6C lists 78,000/51,000 BTU/h. These are each family's DOE test results, not a calculation error, and they are copied exactly as published.
Cabinets, blowers and electrical requirements are effectively the same generation: 21-inch cabinet, 1 HP variable 25-speed constant-torque blower, InteliSense capability, and a 20 A maximum breaker (15 A with the low-amp kit on the 97).
