Carrier Furnace Retrofit
A furnace retrofit is a replacement inside an existing house with old ductwork, venting and often a chimney: BC Wide plans the venting change, condensate routing, gas supply, airflow and access so the new 95%+ furnace works with what the house already has. Most Lower Mainland replacements are retrofits. The house was built around an older furnace: an 80% unit on a metal chimney, a furnace in a tight closet with ducts sized for less airflow, or a layout where new plastic venting has nowhere clean to run. Retrofit planning is where those conflicts are found before installation day.
Because every new furnace condenses, the retrofit almost always includes new plastic venting, a condensate drain or pump, and attention to whatever shared the old chimney. A water heater left on a masonry chimney may need a liner once the furnace stops heating that chimney.
Airflow is the other retrofit question: old ducts were often sized loosely, and a modern furnace with a certified temperature rise needs the right CFM through them. The assessment measures static pressure so the retrofit scope is complete and the furnace does not trip its limits from day one.
Carrier specifics
Carrier sells residential gas furnaces in Canada through its Canadian site and dealer network, in three tiers: Comfort, Performance and Infinity. Furnaces range from single-stage models to modulating units with variable-speed blowers, and all current sizes are design certified in Canada.
BC Wide lists Carrier among the brands it works on. Factory-authorized dealer status for Carrier has not been confirmed and is not claimed here.

Permits: Yes for the gas work — a gas permit from Technical Safety BC or, in the six municipalities with their own systems, from the municipality. BC Wide pulls it.
When not to DIY
- Never open the burner compartment or work on gas, combustion or venting components yourself
- Gas piping work requires a Technical Safety BC licensed gas contractor and the applicable permit
- If you smell gas, leave the building and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911 before anything else

Questions people ask
Can a new condensing furnace use my old chimney?
No. Condensing furnaces vent through plastic pipe to a sidewall termination; they cannot connect to a metal B-vent or masonry chimney. If a water heater used that chimney, it may need its own liner once the furnace leaves it.
My furnace is in a closet with no drain nearby. Is a retrofit still possible?
Usually yes, with a condensate pump that lifts the water to an available drain. The assessment confirms the pump location, power and routing.
Why do retrofit quotes vary so much?
Because the hidden work varies: venting route, condensate, gas line size, duct transitions and access all change the labour. A complete proposal lists them so the comparison is apples to apples.
