ECM versus PSC blower motors: what the motor actually does
The three blower motor types found in gas furnaces, what each does and does not do, why ECM motors are standard on modern furnaces, how blower choice interacts with staging and ducts, and how to read the motor type from product data.
Short answer
PSC motors are the older fixed-speed standard: simple, inexpensive, and limited to a few speeds with no feedback. ECM motors are electronically commutated: more efficient, quieter, and available as constant-torque (multi-speed, installer-selected) or constant-airflow (measuring and holding the airflow the control requests). The blower choice affects electricity use, comfort and how the furnace behaves with filters and ducts — and it is a separate decision from burner staging.
The three motor types
PSC (permanent split capacitor) motors run at fixed speeds set by the control, use the most electricity of the three types, and are found on entry furnaces and older equipment. Constant-torque ECMs are electronically commutated motors with many selectable speeds (Carrier's multi 18-speed and variable 25-speed motors are examples); they run efficiently at the selected speed but do not measure airflow. Constant-airflow ECMs add feedback: the motor measures and holds the airflow the control requests as filters load and dampers move, and is standard on communicating furnaces such as Carrier's Infinity line.
The naming varies by manufacturer, which is why this site's model pages record the motor type from the product data rather than the marketing name.
What the motor does for the house
The blower delivers the airflow that carries heat: the certified temperature rise on the rating plate depends on the right CFM across the heat exchanger. A constant-airflow motor keeps delivering its requested airflow as a filter loads, which protects the furnace from the slow starvation a fixed-speed motor allows. It also supports slower, quieter continuous-fan operation and, on communicating systems, coordinates airflow with cooling and zoning.
Electricity use matters too: ECM motors use a fraction of the power of equivalent PSC motors, which shows in the furnace's ENERGY STAR-related electrical ratings.
Blower type is not staging
The blower and the burner are separate systems, and sales copy blurs them: a variable-speed blower does not make a furnace modulating, and a constant-airflow motor does not imply a two-stage burner. The product data keeps the fields apart (staging describes the gas valve; the blower field describes the motor), and this site's model pages do the same, so the reader can check both.
What it means at service time
ECM motors report to the control in ways PSC motors cannot: speed and, on constant-airflow types, delivered airflow, which is why controls log blower RPM events and why diagnosis reads those logs. Replacement motors are model-specific and must be matched to the furnace's program; water damage and electrical faults are the common early killers.

Questions people ask
Is an ECM motor worth the extra cost?
For electricity use, quiet operation and airflow behaviour, yes, which is why ECMs are standard on modern furnaces at every tier except the very bottom. The entry tiers now use constant-torque ECMs rather than PSC motors.
What is the difference between constant-torque and constant-airflow?
Constant-torque ECMs run efficiently at installer-selected speeds without airflow feedback. Constant-airflow ECMs measure and hold the airflow the control requests, compensating for filter loading and duct changes.
Can a PSC furnace be upgraded to an ECM motor?
Not practically: the motor, control and often the programming are integrated. Motor type is a furnace-selection decision.
