Blower motor
The blower motor moves air through the heat exchanger and ducts in heating, cooling and continuous-fan modes. Furnaces today use ECM motors (constant-torque or constant-airflow) whose speed is controlled electronically; failures show as no airflow, weak airflow, noise, or RPM codes on the control.
Short answer
If the blower does not run at all, check the filter is not jamming it and that the blower door is fully seated (the door switch cuts power). ECM blowers report speed to the control, so failures often log an RPM code (for example no-RPM or failed-to-reach-speed codes on the controls documented on this site). Diagnosis checks the motor harness, the wheel, and the control's command before replacing the motor.
Types of blower motor
PSC motors run at fixed speeds on a capacitor and use the most electricity. Constant-torque ECMs (Carrier's variable 25-speed on the Performance line, or the multi-speed motors on entry furnaces) run efficiently at many selectable speeds. Constant-airflow ECMs, standard on communicating furnaces such as Carrier's Infinity line, measure and hold the airflow the control requests as filters load and dampers move.
How they fail
Bearings wear (squealing, grinding), wheels load with dust (vibration, weak airflow), and the motor electronics can fail (nothing, or codes). Water from a condensate leak can destroy a blower motor, which is why water around the furnace is worth fixing promptly.
Diagnosis
The control logs blower RPM events where the motor reports speed. A technician checks the harness and connectors, confirms the wheel turns freely, verifies the control is commanding the motor, and measures the motor's response before replacing anything.

Questions people ask
Can a blower motor be repaired instead of replaced?
Some motors allow bearing or capacitor service; most modern ECM failures are repaired by replacing the motor or its module. The technician confirms the part for your exact model.
Is the blower motor covered by warranty?
It is a part, so the parts warranty applies on a registered furnace subject to the cause; labour is usually separate. Water damage and electrical faults from outside the furnace are typically excluded.
Why does my blower run at the wrong speed?
Speed is set by the control configuration (and on constant-airflow motors, by the requested CFM). Wrong speeds usually mean wrong settings, a wrong thermostat signal, or a motor that can no longer deliver.
