Furnace filters explained: MERV, sizes and the airflow trade
What furnace filters do, how MERV ratings work, why filter choice affects furnace operation, how to find the right size, change intervals, and the airflow checks that confirm the filter is not hurting the system.
Short answer
The furnace filter protects the equipment and ducts from dust, and every filter is a trade between filtration and airflow: a higher MERV rating filters more but restricts more, and a filter too restrictive for the furnace raises static pressure, cuts airflow and can trip limits. Choose the size the furnace takes, a MERV the duct system can afford, and change it on schedule (typically every one to three months for 1-inch filters).
What the filter does
The filter sits in the return-air path and protects the blower wheel, heat exchanger and ducts from dust. It does not clean the whole house's air by itself; its job is equipment protection, with indoor air quality served by the filter's MERV rating and, for deeper filtration, by purpose-built air cleaners.
Because the filter is in the airflow path, its resistance subtracts directly from the airflow the furnace can deliver. Manufacturers publish the effect: Carrier's product data notes airflow reductions with its high-efficiency media filter and certifies its watt data with a specific filter installed.
MERV and the airflow trade
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how well a filter captures particles: MERV 8 catches common dust and pollen, MERV 11 to 13 catches finer particles including some smoke and allergens, and higher ratings restrict airflow more. A MERV 13 filter in a furnace whose ducts and blower cannot absorb the pressure drop will starve the furnace, especially on high fire.
The sensible range for most residential furnaces is MERV 8 to 13, with the choice confirmed by the furnace's airflow capability and the duct static pressure, not by the filter aisle's marketing.
Sizes and media cabinets
Filters come in rack sizes (the common 1-inch sizes like 16x25 or 20x25) and media-cabinet sizes for furnaces with factory media cabinets, which are matched to the furnace width. The size is printed on the filter frame and in the furnace documentation; a wrong-size filter lets air bypass unfiltered or fails to seat, which is its own airflow problem.
Change intervals and the seasonal pattern
The interval depends on the filter type and the house: every one to three months for typical 1-inch pleated filters, longer for deeper media filters, more often with pets, renos or heavy dust. A loaded filter is the most common cause of weak airflow and limit trips, and the pattern peaks in early winter as the heating season starts on a filter that served all summer.

Is a higher MERV always better?
No. Above what the furnace and ducts can deliver airflow for, a higher MERV starves the system. The right rating balances filtration against the furnace's airflow capability.
Can a dirty filter damage my furnace?
Yes, over time: restricted airflow raises temperature rise, trips limits, and stresses the heat exchanger and blower. The filter is the cheapest maintenance item in the house.
How do I know the filter fits my furnace?
