Furnace filter
The filter protects the furnace and the ducts from dust, and every airflow problem starts here: a loaded filter raises resistance, cuts airflow, raises temperature rise and can trip limits. Filter choice is a balance of MERV and pressure drop for the specific furnace.
Short answer
Change or clean your filter on schedule: every one to three months for typical 1-inch pleated filters, longer for deeper media filters, and more often with pets or heavy dust. Use the size and type your furnace is designed for, because an over-restrictive high-MERV filter can starve the furnace of air. If the furnace has been tripping limits or rooms have gone weak, check the filter first.
Why filters matter to the furnace
The filter sits in the return-air path, so its resistance subtracts directly from the airflow the furnace can deliver. Manufacturers publish the effect: Carrier's product data notes airflow reductions with its high-efficiency media filter, and its certified performance figures are measured with a specific filter installed.
Choosing the right filter
MERV rating describes filtration; pressure drop describes the airflow cost. A MERV 13 filter that fits the rack can still be wrong for the furnace if the ducts and blower cannot absorb its resistance. The filter size and the furnace's airflow capability decide the sensible MERV range.
Filter changes as maintenance
Filter changes are the maintenance item owners can do themselves, and they are the difference between a furnace that runs in its certified range and one that overheats. Annual maintenance includes confirming the filter arrangement is right for the cabinet.

Questions people ask
What happens if I run the furnace without a filter?
The blower wheel and heat exchanger load with dust, airflow drops over time, and the furnace runs hotter. Run with the correct filter in place.
Does a dirty filter waste gas?
Indirectly, yes: restricted airflow raises temperature rise, makes the furnace run less efficiently and can trip limits, so the burner cycles more. The filter is the cheapest maintenance item in the house.
My filter size is odd. Where do I find the right one?
The size is printed on the filter frame or in the furnace documentation; some furnaces take a media filter in a factory cabinet sized to the furnace width. BC Wide confirms fit during maintenance.
