Furnace overheating and limit trips

A furnace that trips its limit switch is overheating because airflow is not removing heat fast enough: a loaded filter, blocked registers, a failing blower, or ducts too small for the furnace. The limit stops the burner; the cause is an airflow problem, and it needs measurement, not a new switch.

Short answer

The limit switch is the furnace's overheat protection: it opens when the heat exchanger gets too hot, stopping the burner while the blower keeps running to cool things down. When it trips repeatedly, the furnace is not moving enough air. Check the filter and that registers are open; if it still trips, a technician measures temperature rise and static pressure to find the restriction or blower problem. A limit that trips constantly is not fixed by replacing the switch.

Why the limit opens

The limit opens when the temperature in the heat exchanger area exceeds its set point. That happens when the air moving across the heat exchanger is too little or too slow: a loaded filter, a dirty blower wheel, a blower that is not running or not at the right speed, closed registers, undersized ducts, or a furnace oversized for the ducts it feeds.

The symptom pattern

On single-stage furnaces the pattern is the burner running a few minutes, then shutting off while the fan continues, then relighting: a short cycle with the limit as the culprit. On two-stage furnaces it often appears on high fire only, because high fire needs the most airflow. The furnace's code history shows the limit events.

A hot smell is information

A hot, dusty or electrical smell when the furnace runs can be first-use dust burning off a new furnace or a heat exchanger running hot from airflow starvation. If the smell is sharp, persistent or accompanied by soot or flames visible at the burner access, stop the furnace and call; those are combustion symptoms, not airflow symptoms.

Is a tripping limit switch dangerous?

The limit is protecting the furnace, so a trip is the safe behaviour. The danger is the underlying condition: running a furnace that repeatedly overheats can crack a heat exchanger. Find the airflow cause.

Can I just replace the limit switch?

Replacing the switch does not fix the overheating and can hide it. The switch is tested and kept if it works; the airflow cause is the repair.

Why does the furnace smell hot in the fall?

The first firing after months of idle burns dust off the heat exchanger, which smells hot for a cycle or two. If the smell persists beyond the first burns, or returns with a code, have it checked.
