Weak airflow from registers
Weak register airflow comes from a restriction somewhere in the path: filters, returns, ducts, dampers, or the blower itself. The diagnosis is measurement: static pressure and register CFM identify where the air is being lost.
Short answer
Start with the filter: a loaded filter is the most common airflow killer, and the cheapest to rule out. Check that supply and return grilles are open and unblocked. If airflow is still weak, the causes are measured, not guessed: static pressure at the furnace and airflow at registers separate a filter problem, a return problem, a duct problem and a blower problem.

The filter first
A loaded filter raises the resistance the blower must overcome and cuts delivered airflow across the whole house. Manufacturers publish the effect: Carrier's product data, for example, notes airflow reductions with its media filter. Check the filter's condition and replace it with the right size and type for the cabinet.
Returns and grilles
Air must come back to the furnace as freely as it leaves. Blocked or undersized return grilles starve the system and make the supply side weak, especially in rooms far from the return. Closed or blocked supply registers in a room simply redirect air elsewhere, so check the room itself first.
Measurement separates the rest
Static pressure at the furnace tells the technician the total resistance; pressure across the filter and coil shows their share; register airflow shows delivery. Crushed flex duct, undersized ducts, a dirty blower wheel or an ECM blower set to the wrong speed each produce a different measurement signature.

Questions people ask
Why is airflow weak in only one room?
The problem is usually in that room's branch: a crushed or disconnected flex duct, a closed damper, or a register blocked by furniture. The rest of the system can be fine.
Does a bigger furnace fix weak airflow?
No. A bigger furnace needs more airflow, which worse ducts cannot deliver, and it will trip its limits. Weak airflow is fixed at the ducts, filter or blower, not by upsizing.
How often should I change my filter to keep airflow strong?
Every one to three months for typical 1-inch filters, or per the filter's guidance for deeper media. During heavy use or with pets, check monthly.
