Control board
The control board sequences every furnace operation: it runs the inducer, ignitor, gas valve and blower, monitors the safety switches, stores fault history and shows status codes. Board failures are real but are usually diagnosed after the parts it controls are ruled out.
Modern control boards carry a model program that must match the furnace; Carrier's manuals, for example, require a replacement board to be programmed with the program number on the rating plate.
The board also reports its own failures with control-error codes, and the service labels documented on this site give the standard remedy: cycle power once, and replace the control if the code repeats.
Safety
Control boards manage the gas valve and safeties. Diagnosis and replacement are technician work, and a replacement board must be programmed for the exact model.

Why is the control board usually the last part replaced?
Because most board-related symptoms have wiring, supply or component causes that are cheaper to test first. Replacing a good board is expensive and common when diagnosis is skipped.
Can a power surge damage the control board?
Yes, surges are a common cause of board failure. A surge protector on the furnace circuit, where the electrician confirms it is appropriate, reduces the risk.
