End-of-season furnace checklist for spring in BC

The most useful furnace record is the one you keep while the winter is fresh: how many times the furnace stopped, what codes appeared, how often it cycled, and what repairs were done. If a technician attended during the winter, keep the invoices and service records together; manufacturers' warranties commonly require maintenance history, and the records make the autumn maintenance conversation accurate.

Change the filter so the summer cooling season starts clean, and note the size and date on the frame for the next change. Look at the vent and intake terminations for winter damage: sagging pipe, cracked fittings or debris. Check the condensate path one last time and confirm any exterior termination is clear.

If the furnace shares ducts with an air conditioner or heat pump, spring is when the cooling side gets its own check — the same blower, coil and condensate drain serve both seasons.

Furnace replacements cluster in autumn because that is when failures happen. Planning in spring changes the dynamics: contractors have more scheduling room, the assessment can happen without a cold house, and the replacement can be installed before the heating season needs it. The same logic applies to repairs that were deferred through the winter: a known condensate or venting issue fixed in spring is cheaper than the same issue diagnosed on a December night.
