Furnace blowing cold air
A furnace whose blower runs but delivers cold air has a burner that is not lighting or not staying lit: an ignition, gas-supply or flame-proving problem, or a thermostat demand mismatch. The fan is often running on its own (continuous fan) while the heat side has failed.
Short answer
Check the thermostat is calling for heat, not just fan; then read the status code on the furnace control and look it up on this site. Cold air with the fan running usually means the burner did not light or dropped out, which the control records as an ignition or flame-loss code. Why the fan can run without heat
The blower and the burner are controlled separately. A continuous-fan setting (G) runs the blower on its own, and the blower also runs for a set off-delay after a heating cycle. Cold air while the fan runs therefore does not mean the furnace is broken in the blower department; it means the heat side did not run or did not stay on.
On most furnaces the sequence is: thermostat calls for heat, inducer starts, pressure switch proves draft, ignitor heats, gas valve opens, flame sensor proves flame, and only then the blower starts after a short delay. A failure at any step produces a status code, which is the fastest way to tell what stopped.
Checks that are safe to do
Confirm the thermostat is set to Heat with the set point above room temperature, and that it is calling (the display usually shows a flame or heat icon).
Confirm the gas shut-off valve at the furnace is fully open in line with the pipe; if someone turned it for summer, the furnace cannot light.
Read the code on the control display or LED through the door and note the exact digits before calling.
Check the vent and intake terminations for snow, ice or blockage, and the floor for water from the condensate path.
What the codes say
An ignition or flame-loss code says the burner never lit or did not stay lit; causes run from gas supply and ignitors to flame sensors and venting. A pressure-switch code says draft was not proven, pointing at venting, condensate or the inducer. Look the code up on the error-code pages for your brand and family before calling.

Is cold air from the vents dangerous?
Cold air alone is a comfort problem, not a danger; the furnace has stopped heating, which is its safe state. If the cold air comes with a gas smell or a CO alarm, treat it as an emergency and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911.
Should I turn the furnace off while waiting for service?
Set the thermostat to Off or Fan Auto to stop the blower from running constantly, and leave the furnace's power on so the control keeps its fault history. A technician uses that history to diagnose.
Why does the furnace blow cold air only sometimes?
Intermittent cold air usually tracks intermittent ignition: a flame sensor that works when clean and fails when fouled, or a draft condition that appears in certain weather. The stored fault history shows the pattern.
