Dual-fuel systems
A dual-fuel (hybrid) system pairs a gas furnace with a heat pump: the heat pump heats in mild weather and the furnace takes over in cold weather, sharing the blower and ductwork. It is a system design decision based on house, ducts, electrical service and energy prices.
Short answer
Dual-fuel means a gas furnace and an air-source heat pump sharing one duct system, with the control choosing which heats: the heat pump in mild weather, the furnace when it is cold enough that the heat pump is inefficient or cannot keep up. Whether it pays depends on the house's heat loss, the duct airflow available to the coil, the electrical service, and electricity versus gas prices. Rebates for heat pumps do not transfer to gas furnaces; this site lists rebate programs only when verified for the specific equipment.
How the changeover works
A dual-fuel thermostat or communicating control decides the changeover temperature from the heat pump's balance point and energy prices. In cooling season the same heat pump provides air conditioning through the furnace's coil. The furnace's blower and ductwork serve both, which is why the airflow capacity of the furnace matters to the size of heat pump you can add.
The furnace side
Furnace manufacturers document dual-fuel compatibility (Carrier calls it Hybrid Heat and lists it on the product data used across this site). The furnace controls the blower and, on two-stage systems, coordinates with the heat pump's stages; wiring and control configuration are part of the installation.
The honest economics
The economics turn on the gap between electricity and gas prices, the heat pump's efficiency at local winter temperatures, and how much of the heating season the heat pump can carry. A consultation should show the numbers; a brochure should not. Equipment, ducts and electrical service are verified before the recommendation, not after the sale.

Is a dual-fuel system eligible for rebates?
